About this client

Created in 1967 and opened in 1969, the National Arts Centre was built by Canada’s leading artistic figures at the time; the leadership of Hamilton Southam and Lester B. Pearson transformed a simple idea into the magnificent national organization for Ottawa’s performing arts that we see today. In the mid-70s the NAC faced economic issues and realized the government could no longer be its sole source of funding. Fundraising initiatives were implemented and supporters began donating large sums of money. The NAC is now mainly subsidized by the National Arts Centre Foundation, which is comprised by private fundraising. The NAC has solidified its reputation as the only bilingual, multidisciplinary performing arts centre in Canada. It is home to the NAC Orchestra, English Theatre, French Theatre and Dance as well as Scene Festivals and NAC Presents. Their dedication to educational activities for youth has developed programs such as the Summer Music Institute, which brings in 100 musicians from around the world each year. The NAC strives to create and maintain a national stage for the performing arts and bolsters creation, learning and performance across Canada.
