Opera Lyra was founded in 1984 by soprano Diana Gilchrist to fill the space left by the cancellation of the National Arts Centre’s annual opera festival. In the ensuing decades the company has flourished to become one of the largest performing arts organizations in the National Capital Region, with outstanding educational programs such as the Young Artists Training Program founded in 1999 by then-General Director Tyrone Patterson. Opera Lyra consistently draws talent from across Canada and around the world. The company has recently undergone restructuring after financial difficulties caused them to cancel the second half of their 2011-12 season. At the close of their third decade in business and looking to future endeavours, Opera Lyra will remain committed to offering a plethora of high-quality musical and educational programming as well as implementing new initiatives in order to introduce a larger audience to the wonders of opera, and to solidify its power and passion for the operatic genre.
